Bristol-Myers Squibb ha annunciato che 20 abstract su abatacept e clazakizumab saranno presentati al prossimo congresso EULAR (European League Against Rheumatism), in programma a Parigi dall’11 al 14 giugno.
La quantità di dati che saranno presentati sottolinea l'impegno di BMS nello sviluppo di terapie innovative per i pazienti affetti da artrite reumatoide e da altre malattie immuno-mediate con farmaci quali abatacept, pionieristico modulatore selettivo della co-stimolazione delle cellule T, disponibile in Italia per il trattamento dell’artrite reumatoide dal 2007, e clazakizumab, farmaco in fase di sperimentazione clinica, inibitore selettivo della citochina IL-6.

L’artrite reumatoide
L’artrite reumatoide (AR) è una patologia sistemica, cronica, autoimmune caratterizzata da infiammazione del rivestimento delle articolazioni (o sinovia), che provoca danni articolari con dolore cronico, rigidità, gonfiore e affaticamento. L’AR limita la mobilità delle persone che ne sono affette e riduce la funzionalità articolare. Le donne sono maggiormente colpite da questa patologia rispetto agli uomini e rappresentano il 75% delle diagnosi di artrite reumatoide.
Abatacept
Abatacept in combinazione con metotressato è indicato per il trattamento dell’artrite reumatoide attiva da moderata a grave in pazienti adulti che hanno avuto una risposta insufficiente alla precedente terapia con uno o più farmaci antireumatici modificanti la malattia (DMARDs) incluso metotressato (MTX) o un inibitore del Fattore di Necrosi Tumorale (TNF)-alfa.
Sono stati dimostrati un’inibizione della progressione del danno articolare ed un miglioramento della funzione fisica durante il trattamento di combinazione con abatacept e metotressato.
La terapia concomitante di abatacept con un inibitore del TNF non è raccomandata.
Non ci sono evidenze sufficienti per valutare la sicurezza e l'efficacia di abatacept in combinazione con anakinra e rituximab.
Analisi farmacocinetiche sulla popolazione non hanno rilevato alcun effetto di metotressato, FANS e corticosteroidi sulla clearance di abatacept. Non sono stati identificati problemi di sicurezza maggiori con l’uso di abatacept in combinazione con sulfasalazina, idrossiclorochina, o leflunomide.
Il trattamento con abatacept deve essere iniziato e seguito da un medico specialista con esperienza nella diagnosi e nel trattamento dell'AR.
Abatacept è disponibile in Italia per il trattamento dell’artrite reumatoide dal 2007.
Abatacept è un medicinale soggetto a prescrizione medica limitativa.
Artrite idiopatica giovanile poliarticolare
Abatacept per via endovenosa in combinazione con metotressato è indicato per il trattamento dell'artrite idiopatica giovanile poliarticolare (juvenile idiopathic arthritis, JIA) da moderata a grave in pazienti pediatrici dai 6 anni di età ed oltre che hanno avuto una risposta insufficiente agli altri DMARDs, incluso almeno un inibitore del TNF.
